Navigator Dinghy build progress part 27
Fittings installation
Mizzen mast halyard fittings. I am using one of the techniques recommended by Gougeon brothers for fasteners. This shows the final stage, with the fitting epoxied in place, ready for the masking tape to be removed.
First a pilot hole is drilled at the hole location. Then the hole is counterbored but leaving enough pilot hole so the machine screw can be tightened without stripping out the hole. Masking tape is cut around the fitting. This is one of the saddle eyes on the main boom. A cleat is already installed.
Here are the spars with a lot of the fittings installed. Before I started the fittings, I varnished and painted them.
Locating the mizzen mast hole in the deck. I drilled a small hole, then used a jig to find the proper spot. This spot is marked with pencil lines on the tape. Quite far off from the measured position i used for the small hole.
The mizzen mast, boom and sail being fitted. I also measure the length needed for the lines.
Creating the mast step on the main mast. The main mast step is a square hole, so shaping the mast to fit the step.
The mast step is finished, and the mast is stepped into the boat.
Fitting the mizzen boomkin in place. This needed a hole in the transom.
A gusset on the boomkin to keep it from sliding into the boat farther.
