Navigator Dinghy build progress part 23
November 2, 2022
While waiting for some glue to dry, I started working on the mizzen boomkin. The doug fir blank I glued up needed to be planed down to proper dimension and made square. This didn't take long. I then drew the taper on the outboard end of the boomkin, and planed the blank down to that taper. This spar is square inside of the boat, and then will transition to round aft of the transom.
Main task at this time is to complete the deck and coaming paint. Here we have sanded back the dark blue, in preparation for another coat of paint.
After the boomkin is planed square and tapered, the next step is turn the part eventually to be round to octagon shape.
The main paint job is now down. Ready to start putting on some hardware.
View from the rear. Still some areas of paint to finish up.
Getting ready to fasten down some cam cleats. The idea is to have a wide hole about halfway, and the rest just large enough for the machine screw. I then fill with epoxy and bolt down the cleat. There is enough wood for the machine screw to hold everything in place while the epoxy cures.
Same process for chocks on the foredeck.
Finished job on a jib sheet cam cleat.
Rear deck cleats and mizzen cam cleat in.
The gudgeons and motor mount holes were filled with epoxy a long time ago. Now its time to drill them out and install the hardware.
Trial fit of the tiller, Fits just fine.
Trial fit of the rudder, it fits but has some interference when swinging up. I'll have to shave some wood off of it.
I forgot to epoxy the centerboard pin holes when making it, so I have to do it now.
Bottom of centerboard has been painted, the top is still in primer.
